Café de Ceuvel draws you in with its endless evening sun, enjoyed with delicious food, drinks and music in a cozy pavilian, the hammock, or on the veranda, terrace or dock to the water. Here, the food is not only tasty, healthy and affordable, but is good for the planet, too. De Ceuvel works closely with producers and consumers, with vegetables coming from the '50/50 green' garden just around the corner, lemonade made in house, and mushrooms grown within Amsterdam's bustling urban agriculture.
Café de Ceuvel is on a driven path of experimentation to answer the question: how self-sustaining can a café be? They built a compost digester to turn our kitchen waste into biogas for cooking, and recovers nutrients from urine for fruit trees and the rooftop greenhouse! To top it off, the café is made entirely from recycled materials.
The café is located on a former shipyard that has been transformed in recent years into a self-sufficient office park where old houseboats are lifted onto land and restored with the most sustainable techniques. Between the houseboats lining the area, plants grow that clean the bottom. The sustainability of the area inspires the café to continue seeking the most sustainable solutions and be a platform for meeting today's planetary challenges.
